Year 9 PASS

Year 9 PASS receiving instruction at Scotts Head beach

It is well known throughout the community that we live in a beautiful place. Over the previous two weeks, our Year 9 PASS students were given the opportunity to enjoy our stretch of coastline as part of their unit of work on ‘Fundamentals of Surfing’. Both days began with a rubbish collection after paying close attention to the impact of plastic waste on the ocean ecosystems throughout Term 4.

In a competition style format, students amassed an enormous amount of waste bound for the ocean. Students approached the task with a smile from ear to ear and left the accompanying teachers in a state of shock as they crawled, climbed and caressed their way through the coastal scrub in search of rubbish. When all was said and done on the rubbish front, students were put to the test as they could finally put their learning into practice at the beautiful shores of Scotts Head Beach.

After gruelling swim tests and some board rescues, students were offered a lessons by our resident surf coach, Paul Evans. Students were all ears as ‘Pauly’ took them through their paces and before too long it was time to hit the water. Careful to start, both groups showed considerable growth in their ability as the two days unfolded. To witness the joy as the students rode their first wave was a sight to see.

Students demonstrated great patience as they tamed the waves and for staff involved it was an incredible excursion to be a part of. Days like these are days to remember. I have great confidence that the students will carry their learning into a restful but enjoyable summer break and hopefully enjoy some time at the beach.

Thank you Year 9 – see you out in the surf!
