Defence Force Presentation

Sergeant Matthew Scott – Royal Australian Army Corps of Signals (Communication Systems Operator) and Corporal Ian Leggett – Vehicle Mechanic – Australian Army visited MHS to explain to students the benefits of a career in the Australian Defence Force. Offering the choice of 300 careers within three services there would be a job to suit anyone interested in applying. They explained the difference between Officer and General entry and the ability for students to apply for the ADFA Education Awards (Y11 only) which is opening soon.

The officers explained the Gap Year program which enables those who have finished year 12 to have a military training and lifestyle experience. It provides a once in a lifetime 'one year work' program in the Navy or Army, currently not available in the Air Force (expected to commence soon). They also spoke of the many other benefits that include pay allowances, travel, sport, free medical/dental, subsidised accommodation and meals. Although this is attractive, the selection process is very competitive and applicants need to be prepared mentally and physically for the recruitment process, ensuring that they have researched their chosen field and are motivated to become a member of the Australian Defence Force. Students wanting further information should visit www.defencejobs.gov.au or contact MHS Career Adviser, Celestine Porter-Burns.
