If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

Dear Parents and Carers,

As you are aware the fire weather warning has decreased, however, the smoke haze continues to impact our school and we are endeavouring to keep as much continuity of learning as possible with regular classes. Today, in line with Health Dept and WHS guidelines, we kept all students inside during breaks before school and at recess. At lunch, the air cleared enough for students to have the choice of indoor areas or passive outdoor areas with no physical activity. We are planning the same for tomorrow. Sport will be wet weather with all sports remaining at school.

Three MHS students were recently recognised for their achievements in STEM education at the prestigious Ignite Mid North Coast event held at the Slim Dusty Centre in Kempsey.

Connor Grace, James Hamer and Kaleb Cooper were presented awards by Local Federal MP Pat Conaghan and acclaimed futurist Steve Samartino. Our students also displayed some of their outstanding project work and participated in “Future” themed workshops.

Dance Rites

Five Macksville High School Students have taken part in the final dress rehearsal for their Dance Rites, Opera House Performance taking place next weekend the 23 and 24 of November.

They performed recently at the Scott’s Head Park in front of parents, friends and the local community. Students took part in cultural workshops and helped make a range of costumes for the performances.

They will be performing three dances based on Gumbaynggirr stories.

We wish the girls and Paul Evans all the best for their big performance next week at the Sydney Opera House!

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Year 8 Visual Art students have been busy studying masks from a range of different cultures. We have examined the history, types of materials used and meanings behind African, Venetian, Indonesian, Japanese and Commedia dell'arte masks.

Students have now started to create a plaster mask of their own faces which they will then paint and add different materials too.

Uniform Update

As of Term 4 2019 the MHS black shorts can be worn by both male and female students every day of the week. This is for all year groups, 7-12. The shorts must carry the Macksville High School logo.

They are available for purchase from Binalong Promotional Clothing, 5 Wallace St, Macksville Ph 6568 2578 and Nambucca T-Shirts, 42 Bowra Street, Nambucca Ph 6569 4270.

The uniform remains smart and practical. Students wearing it show that they are part of our school and take pride in representing the school, giving MHS a collective identity.

Girls League Tag North Coast Regional Final

Macksville High School sent thirteen girls to the League Tag Regional final on Wednesday 4^th September. To make it to this stage of the competition the girls won the Coffs Harbour region gala day back in March.

The girls were very keen and they played their hearts out and won two games against Grafton High and Kyogle High and had a draw with Kingscliff High. Unfortunately the girls lost to St Josephs Regional and St Clares College.

The behaviour and sportsmanship from the Macksville High team was outstanding and it is a credit to them, their parents and the Macksville community.

Macksville ‘A’ Debaters are Zone Champions!

Macksville High School’s Year 7 and 8 ‘A’ Debating Team are Zone champions after defeating Bellingen High in Round 3 of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The ‘A’ team had the task of proving the negative case for the topic, ‘That elective cosmetic surgery should be banned’ and they raised some convincing points about the rights of the individual and how physical appearance is linked to mental health and wellbeing.

Our Year 7 and 8 ‘B’ Debating team performed commendably in a close debate, but were defeated by Bellingen in Round 3. Macksville had the task of proving the affirmative case for the topic, ‘That Australia should increase its refugee intake’ and raised good points about how every human should have a safe place to stay and how allowing more refugees into our country will make us a more diverse and tolerant society.

Our ‘A’ team will now move through to the Regional level of the competition.

Year 9 elective Engineering students were challenged to design and build a bridge that would span an 80 cm gap using coffee stirrers.

The winning design weighed 270 grams and supported a load of 18 kg.

The Shark Cage ® Program for young women

The Shark Cage program is designed by psychologists and educators for all young women. It is aimed to empower young women to become more aware of the challenges faced by women in today’s society and develop strength and resilience.

Year 9 girls completed the seven-week Shark Cage Program for young women. In the final session the girls put together a mural of their work. Fish represent the girls, with each girl writing a positive quality that they had noticed in their peers during the course. The bars of rights protect the fish from the sharks. The girls identified shark-like (disrespectful) behaviours on the shark shapes. Dolphin-like (respectful) behaviours were also identified and added to the mural. At the bottom of the mural the girls added their treasure chests of healthy coping strategies.

This program helps to develop the skill of reading the warning signs and avoid shark attacks. It is a hands-on course that is fun and informative, run by Mrs Hughes and Ms Garland, who are both passionate about providing young women with the tools for a happier life complete with healthier relationships with friends, family and partners.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Year 8 University of New England Maths Day

Friday 17 May Mr Smith and Ms Hardingham took 8 year 8 students to the annual UNE Year 8 Maths Competition in Armidale.

Team 1 consisted of Jonah Werner, Struan Campbell, Hali McFayden and Hailey Bloomfield.

Team 2 was Bowen Fortescue, Nathan Honnery, Alexandra Hapgood and Samantha Hamer.

They battled teams from far and wide, including local rivals Nambucca and Bowraville, in several rounds that tested their problem solving, team working and Mathematical skills.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

AHS Centaur Commemoration - Lest we forget

14^th May marks the 76^th anniversary of the sinking of the AHS Centaur, a hospital ship attacked and sunk by a Japanese submarine off the coast of Queensland during World War II. On Saturday 11^th May, our captains, Matiese Trisley and Ulysses Roberts read the Litany of Hope at the commemoration service at the War Memorial in River Street. This event is significant for Macksville as Captain Hindmarsh (lost) and the family of Pte Eric Taylor (saved) were residents of Macksville at the time of the sinking.

Dr Hindmarsh was a non-combatant in a non-combatant unit, and Macksville expected their doctor to return. The fact he didn’t, devastated the whole district.

Also representing Macksville High School at the service were Rel. Principal Linda McGregor, Year 12 Advisor Toni Jones, Senior Mentor Teacher Melissa Robertson and HT HSIE Tourmaline Bailey.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Jordan Moore, Logan Jones, Ulysses Roberts and Blake Howle are playing in the U18's Laurie Daley Cup Semi-finals this Sunday at Forster for a place in the final to be held in Mudgee.

The Bulldogs team ranked 1st in the North of the state after a 5 week competition undefeated. They go up against the Illawarra Dragons who ranked 2nd in the South of NSW.

To have four players from one school playing at representative level just shows the depth of talent coming from MHS.

Ginger at Work

Ginger has been attending daily class lessons each Tuesday with her handler Mr Parker. Ginger is primarily used within the classroom environment to support our students.

A noticeable positive influence in learning has been observed and on many occasions students have mentioned it was a welcome surprise to have Ginger greet them at the start of their lesson.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

ArtExpress Port Macquarie Glasshouse

On Friday 26th October, Macksville High School Visual Artists in years 8 - 11 attended an exciting excursion to 'ARTEXPRESS' at the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie.

The exhibition showcased a selection of approximately 40 high ranking Visual Art Major Works, completed in 2017, by Year 12 Visual Art students from schools across NSW.

The visit to the gallery aimed to inspire our young artists to explore the various themes, use of art materials and the quality of the finished artworks chosen for the exhibition. Of note, the exhibition provided a timely opportunity to inform our Year 12 Visual Art Class of 2019 as they consider ideas for their own Visual Art Major Works.

Mark Werner Receives Award for Academic Excellence

Pictured: Mark Werner with friends Emeritus Professor John Norrish and his wife Madeline.

Mark is a valued and respected member of the teaching staff at Macksville High School. He is an Indigenous Torres Strait Islander of the Saibai Nation. This year he was appointed to the HSIE Department where he teaches Geography, History and Business Studies. He has recently completed his teaching degree and graduated from the University of Sydney. This esteemed institution has chosen to reward Mark for his record of superior academic achievement.

Mark's career path has spanned industries and decades. After working in Tasmania as a National Parks and Wildlife Ranger, he moved with his wife and two children to northern NSW. In 2010, he took up the position of Aboriginal Education Officer at Macksville High School. He has been a guiding force in Indigenous student relations within the school and community. This positive experience inspired Mark to study to become a high school teacher and he secured a teaching position with our school upon completion of his studies. Mark's accumulated wealth of practical experience, skills and knowledge, he shares generously with staff and students.

On Thursday 27^th October, Mark was at Sydney University to receive the prestigious ‘Charles Perkins Memorial Prize for Academic Excellence for 2016'. The award ceremony in the Great Hall of the University celebrates the 50^th anniversary of Dr Charles Perkins' graduation. ‘Charlie' Perkins is a recognised part of our Australian heritage. He was a sportsman, Government Minister and civil rights activist who campaigned tirelessly for crucial social change. In 1987 he became a Member of the Order of Australia for services to his country.

The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Sydney University and Mrs Eileen Perkins and family invited Mark to the official event. Mark delivered a speech at the ceremony honouring the commitment and achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Mark is an active member of the Nambucca Valley community and is involved in sporting and social programs. As Mark's friends and colleagues, we congratulate him on his success and are pleased and proud he is part of the Macksville High School team.

Calculators

The use of calculators is compulsory in NSW for Australia wide Maths exams. To support students in this regard, Macksville High School students are required to bring a suitable scientific calculator to each Maths lesson. Failure to do so can affect students' learning as staff members are unable to instruct students in the correct use of the calculator and this can then have an impact on their grades.

A Calculator (model Sharp EL – 531 XB) can be purchased from the front office at a cost of $20. It is preferred that all students use the same calculator to enable efficient instruction to be given. Student Assistance is available for parents who may possibly need help to finance this purchase. Please can you ensure your child brings his/her calculator to school each day so staff can assist your child to achieve their potential?

Homework Centre

The Mathematics department will supervise a homework centre in room C1 from 3.20 to 5.00pm on Thursday afternoons. Tutoring is given in learning maths concepts and assistance in completing homework from other subjects may also be obtained. If you are interested in your child attending please ask him/ her to collect a note from the Maths staff room.

NEW SCHOOL SKIRT DESIGN

The P&C has been working through standardising the design of the girls skirt for both seniors and juniors. The staff and Student Representative Council have also had the opportunity to provide feedback. The colours have not changed but a skirt with 1 box pleat front and back, a waist band and some elastic in the waist is the chosen design. The old straight & pleated skirts are no longer being made by suppliers, shorts are still an option if students prefer them. The recommended length is 10 centimetres from the top of the knee. We have spoken with our uniform suppliers in the valley and will be taking the required 3 year transition period to fully introduce the new design.

Attendance Interviews

The education of your child starts with regular school attendance.

In NSW all children of compulsory school age are required to be enrolled in a state or registered school and to attend school on each day that instruction is provided.

The Department of Education and Training operates a School Liaison Program. Home School Liaison Officers are teachers with a range of educational and professional experiences with expertise in the area of supporting attendance and student welfare.

A number of Home School Liaison Officers will interview identified students (Years 7-12) with attendance concerns at Macksville High School on Friday, 02 August 2012. Please contact the school if you would not like your child to be interviewed.

Parents of identified students will be notified in writing after the interviews have been conducted.

Set Sail on the Voyage of a Lifetime - Young Endeavour Applications Now Open

Australia's national sail training ship Young Endeavour is now accepting applications for youth to join eleven day voyages departing between July 2013 and February 2014. Young Australians aged 16 to 23 can apply for the ballot at www.youngendeavour.gov.au until 31 May 2013. No sailing experience is required.

A voyage in Young Endeavour is a challenging adventure at sea, and an exciting opportunity for youth to develop teamwork and leadership skills through a world recognised organisation. The current ballot includes voyages departing from Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and New Zealand, which will be crewed by youth from around the country.

University student Charlotte Morrissey, of Wagga Wagga, sailed Young Endeavour to Newcastle in 2012 and says her voyage was unlike anything she had ever experienced. "Young Endeavour will challenge you, educate you, excite you and leave you with the skills and personal ambition to achieve whatever you set your sight on!"

During each voyage, youth crew learn the skills to successfully sail a square rigged ship. They climb the 30 metre mast, set and furl sails, and maintain a 24 hour watch on the bridge. They also learn to navigate, take the helm, keep lookout and help the chef in the ship's galley. At the end of the voyage, youth crew will take command of Young Endeavour for 24 hours, sailing the ship along the Australian coast. On their last day at sea they will host a local group of youth with special needs, sharing their new found knowledge and experience.

18 year old Sarah Hall, of Hobart, first sailed Young Endeavour along the Queensland Coast in 2012 and will join the ship again in September for the 2013 International Tall Ship Festival. "Sailing in Young Endeavour is an amazing achievement - it provides opportunities that aren't available in your everyday life," says Sarah. "Take the chance to join a voyage as it will change your perspective of the people and the world around you".

Since 1988 the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme, in partnership with the Royal Australian Navy, has provided challenging training voyages for over 11,000 young Australians in the tall ship Young Endeavour. The specially designed program delivered aboard the ship increases the youth crew's self awareness, develops teamwork and leadership skills, and fosters a strong sense of community spirit.

Year 9 & 10 Graffiti workshop

In art this term we are studying different forms of street art. If anyone noticed the cardboard creatures stuck up around the school – that was our class attempting to art bomb. We have also created our own paste-ups, have begun cutting stencils and will soon work on group interactive chalk murals. To link in with this unit we travelled up to a studio in Coffs Harbour for the day and learnt some serious graffiti skills from artist Ash Johnston. It was a really good day with everyone getting to work together creating an awesome MHS mural, learning some really handy spray paint techniques and leaving with a real appreciation for the complexity of the painting style.

It's back! The Helmet Artwork Design Competition, proudly sponsored by the NRMA Motoring & Services is Bicycle NSW's initiative to raise awareness about helmet use among young bicycle riders across the state. The competition invites students to create the artwork for a new bicycle helmet with the overall winner having their design used on a limited edition helmet that will be available Australia wide.

There are also bicycles and helmets up for grabs for regional winners in NSW and ACT. The competition is also generously supported by Derivan and Anaconda.

Great success and the end of an era for MHS Angus Stud

The Macksville High School Cattle Team continue to enjoy great success at all the shows that they have attended this year, including the Canberra Royal where they won a third place ribbon with one of their cows. Students have recorded significant success in cattle judging and parading which saw Kelsey Watt and Isaac Ryffel representing the North Coast at the Sydney Royal Easter Show this year.

2012 YEAR 10 QUEENSLAND EXCURSION

Following are permission notes and information for the 2012 Year 10 Queensland Excursion. Please take the time to read through all the attachments and return the required notes to the school.

Please note that the initial deposit of $150 is required by the end of Term 2 (29 June). This deposit is not refundable. Instalments can be made through the front office during Term 3. The total cost of $550 is due by Friday 12 October 2012 as numbers need to be finalised with the accommodation and tour providers. The school's Refund Policy is attached for your perusal.

All students must pass a swimming test to participate in aquatic activities. This will take place during PE and Sport at the beginning of Term 4. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that they are tested prior to departure.

Dietary requirements and medical conditions of students are very important. In the unlikely event that medical attention is required, it is important that emergency contact details and Medicare numbers are correct.

The "Excursion Consent Form" (two pages) must be completed fully and returned with the initial deposit. Please note that there is no ambulance cover in Queensland, students must have private ambulance cover or be prepared to pay full costs if the ambulance is called.

Attendance on this excursion is a privilege and numbers are limited. Students who have achieved the highest levels in the welfare system will be given preference, students are therefore reminded to hand in their merit awards to Mrs Mendham as soon as they qualify to go up a star in the welfare system. Students who wish to go on the excursion are also reminded of the need to adhere to school policies with regards to regular attendance, behaviour and the wearing of uniform.

We anticipate that the students will enjoy themselves this year but would encourage parents and students to consider what valuables they bring with them. Teachers will not be responsible for the safe keeping of valuables.

AIM

Our aim at Macksville High School is to recognise and reward students for, demonstrated consistent and or meritorious achievement/effort across a broad range of curricular and extra-curricular activities.

SYSTEM OUTLINE

Students will begin each school year on a One Star level. As students are awarded Macksville High Merits they can progress through the awards system. Each level achieved will be recognised through certificates and special rewards. This scheme will run over a calendar year.

Macksville High merit awards may be given at any time, by any of the teaching staff, to students who have demonstrated consistent and or meritorious achievement/effort. Teaching staff are encouraged to generously award merits. Students need to collect 5 merits to progress to each level of the star system. These awards are to be taken to their Merit Co-ordinator who will record and mark each merit. The merit award can only be used once to qualify for a particular star level. It is the student's responsibility to care for the merits given to them and to present them to their Merit Co-ordinator when they have enough to qualify for a particular level.

Students who are placed on a level 3 or above in the school's discipline system will have ONE star level removed from their ranking in the system. Students may then proceed to the next star level when they collect a further 5 merits. Students who believe they have not received appropriate merit awards can make an application to have their "case" heard by the Principal.

The competition will open for 13 weeks commencing 9am AEST on Thursday 19 April 2012 until 5pm AEST on Sunday 22 July 2012.

I would like to invite you to participate in the Volunteering Video Competition for Young People.

The Australian Government's National Volunteering Strategy identified that the rate of youth volunteering is below the national average and needs to be better supported and encouraged.

The Volunteering Video Competition for Young People invites young Australians aged 15 to under 25 years to create a video that will promote ways for young people to be involved in their community and capture the enjoyment, fun and social interaction that volunteering brings.

The theme for this competition is "Your Passion, Our Nation. Volunteer Now!"

Through this competition, young people can showcase the benefits of volunteering, including:

· Shaping and supporting your community;

· Gaining and enhancing practical skills and experience;

· Helping others and giving something back to your community;

· Gaining satisfaction from taking practical action to build a better community;

· Having fun with others outside traditional responsibilities like school, uni, TAFE and work.

Entrants to the competition will be divided into two groups:

· Category A – Aged 15 to under 18; and

· Category B – Aged 18 to under 25.

Entrants are required to submit a 30 to 60 second audiovisual advertisement to promote volunteering to young people. Video entries will be vetted by the Office for the Not-for-Profit Sector to ensure they meet the competition eligibility criteria. Eligible submissions may be published online on the Competition website.

There are a range of prizes on offer and winners will be announced in September 2012.

We have attached for you a competition promotional poster that you can email to your networks. Your participation in the competition will help spread the message to ensure volunteering grows into the future.

2012 ICAS Exams Permissions Notes due by 27 April

It is time to start preparing for International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) examinations. These exams are an excellent opportunity for students to take part in an international competition that allows them to compare their skill and academic progress with other students across Australia and the world.

ICAS examinations provides a report document that compares individual student, cohort and school academic performance and progress over time in the areas of Writing for students in the primary and secondary years of schooling.

ICAS is the largest independent assessment program for schools in the world with more than 2 million entries annually. Students from over 20 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, Pacific and the USA actively participate in ICAS each year.

This year extra ATAR points will be available for HSC students that receive a High Distinction in any examination; this could provide up to an additional 6 ATAR points. We strongly encourage senior students to take advantage of this new scheme. The ICAS examinations are also highly recognised by all universities.

Defence Force Presentation

Sergeant Matthew Scott – Royal Australian Army Corps of Signals (Communication Systems Operator) and Corporal Ian Leggett – Vehicle Mechanic – Australian Army visited MHS to explain to students the benefits of a career in the Australian Defence Force. Offering the choice of 300 careers within three services there would be a job to suit anyone interested in applying. They explained the difference between Officer and General entry and the ability for students to apply for the ADFA Education Awards (Y11 only) which is opening soon.

The officers explained the Gap Year program which enables those who have finished year 12 to have a military training and lifestyle experience. It provides a once in a lifetime 'one year work' program in the Navy or Army, currently not available in the Air Force (expected to commence soon). They also spoke of the many other benefits that include pay allowances, travel, sport, free medical/dental, subsidised accommodation and meals. Although this is attractive, the selection process is very competitive and applicants need to be prepared mentally and physically for the recruitment process, ensuring that they have researched their chosen field and are motivated to become a member of the Australian Defence Force. 2012 Priority Schools Program Survey Information

To continue to provide wonderful opportunities for our students, Macksville High School will be applying to be part of the Priority Schools Program (PSP) funding program in 2012. A new list of Priority Schools is identified every four years by a voluntary survey to families. The next survey of families will occur in March 2012 for the next funding period, 2013 to 2016.

Only approximately 500 schools across the state will receive PSP funding. We believe it is critical that we do all we can to provide complete information about our community, so that our school has the best chance of being included to receive the substantial benefits that this increase in funding and staffing can provide.

Schools will be selected for the next four year period on the basis of a state wide parent survey that will be conducted during the week of 5 March to 9 March 2012. This survey will identify which schools will receive PSP support from 2013 to 2016.

In our school, parents and carers with children in Years 7, 8 & 9 will be asked to complete a confidential one page survey. The survey is quite easy to fill in and we need every family to complete it if we are to provide accurate information about our community.

Some points to remember are:

the survey is absolutely confidential
you should answer every question as accurately as possible such as, talk about your current employment and not how you have been employed in the past
if you have questions about the survey don't be afraid to ask
those who will benefit most from this program will be your children.

In NSW all children of compulsory school age are required to be enrolled in a state or registered school and to attend school on each day that instruction is provided.

A mobile phone app designed by the Department of Education & Communities to help students with spelling and mathematics has been named as one of the year's best.
The School A to Z app is among the applications featured in Apple Australia's App Store Rewind 2011 which serves as a roundup of the best apps and games for 2011.
Director General of Education, Dr Michele Bruniges said the free app had racked up 40,000 downloads since its August launch by users both in Australia and overseas, including China, Indonesia, the US and the UK.

Learning tool among the best

   "The School A to Z app is consistently in the top 20 free education apps for iPad (via the Australian iTunes Store)," Dr Bruniges said.
   "The app was developed as part of the School A to Z online school community, a resource that includes a website and social media channels."
   She said it aimed to help parents support their child's learning and the response had been overwhelmingly positive, with many parents and students expressing their appreciation in emails to the School A to Z team.
   "The app is designed to be fun to use, as well as educationally useful, and the feedback we've received since the launch shows it succeeds on both fronts," she said.
   "The range of topics covered by School A to Z is truly remarkable, and I urge anyone with an interest in schooling or education to download this valuable, innovative resource."
   She said the School A to Z app was also available for Android.

2012 Student Laptops

Gold Excursion Re-scheduled to 10 Feb 2012

Please be advised that the Gold Excursion for 2011 was cancelled due to bad weather. It has now been re-scheduled to Friday, 10 February 2012 at the Raleigh Water Park. Cost is $22.00, bus leaves at 9.15am and returns by 3.10pm, students can wear mufti for the day but must have shoes, hat, sunscreen and sufficient water. Students will be able to purchase lunch and snacks or are encouraged to bring a packed lunch from home. Eligable students can still pay at the office, notes available from the year advisers.

Hayden Jeffery, Year 11 has short story "NOIR" published in Timeless Tales

We are very proud to announce that Hayden Jeffery in Year 11 at Macksville High School has recently had his short story published in Timeless Tales, after entering the Write4fun, Schools Writing Competition for 2011.

Write4fun was formed to enhance the writing abilities of high and primary schools students throughout Australia and New Zealand and more recently, the United States of America. Students are able to express their thoughts and emotions in a rather exciting and fun manner, as well as take part in a unique educational experience. This competition had no theme!! Entrants are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild and get their creative juices flowing to write on any topic and in any style. Students from all grades were welcome to enter from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Hayden describes his work in his own words:

"The story doesn't, in my view, follow a central plot so much as paints the atmosphere between the two characters ("The Evil Clown" and the unnamed first person narrator) who are versing in stereotyped superhero conflict. I wanted to imply a dark and melancholic bond of personal angst and hypocritical emotions between them; I feel the story is more a verbal portrait or artwork because of this. I'm happy with the end result, but almost a year later, I feel a distance from it, as if the work's author was another person, although much of my other stories still retain the same gloom and internal conflict as this piece.

The characters I used were recycled from other stories/concepts I was still developing; much of what I wrote is what I wrote instantly and in the one session. It's a raw, spontaneous burst of literary violence, to put it in an honest but overly saturated way. The title, "Noir", comes from the French word for "black"; it's also a nod to the 1930's jaded detective crime films, and simultaneously a hint at the mood of the story piece. Ultimately, it is a story between a confused superhero and his tangible, darker half. The twist is distinguishing who is the original and who is the other; the Gothic nihilist teen, or the murderous, psychotic black and white clown".

275KG CLOTHES DONATED

A big thank you to everyone who donated and helped us achieve our amazing total of 275kg of clothes for charity.

Macksville High is always looking for ways to give back to its local community. From, Monday, 17 October for 4 weeks students asked family & friends to donate unwanted clothes. The ultimate goal to reach was 200kg.

The project was run by members of the Premier's Student Volunteers Program who collected, delivered and sorted clothes for the local Macksville Vinnies Shop, spending 2 hours each week in the store. The wonderful students who helped were Liam Noble, Sandie Grant-McDonell, Brooke Green, Shari Hodges, Kylie Ellis & Petrea Guiana, with out their help we would not have achieved such a great goal.

We look forward to running the again next April.

Macksville High School P&C is participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn Program their biggest community program ever!

From July 18th to September 18th 2011, you can earn points for your school - one Woolworths Earn & Learn point for every $10 you spend in store (excluding the purchase of cigarettes, alcohol and gift cards or purchases made through Woolworths online or at Caltex Woolworths co-branded fuel outlets).

Points will automatically appear on your shopping dockets, which you can simply place in the box provided at the counter of the Macksville store. Dockets will also be collect at the school office. We will then collect the dockets and upload the points.

Re: Year 9/10 Elective Subject Information Evening - It is hoped that this early notification will help you and your son/daughter with plans for the 2012 Elective subject choices.

Staff will be there to assist with any questions you may have and a subject selection book will be distributed. Your son/daughter will need to choose three elective subjects and this will be done at school, on computer, following your family discussion. The choices will be confirmed by letter and a parent/guardian signature is then required to confirm the choices are correct.

Computer entered selections can be made from the 22nd of July until the 29th of July. See subjects available from the Junior Curriculum Booklet below.

"Dont miss out" MHS Music Night

Although there is no musical this year, there will be a Music Night on Tuesday, 26 July - 7.30pm (week 2, next term) where there will be an opportunity for students to perform a song/dance/skit, with an emphasis on songs from Musicals. Anyone who would like to participate should see Mr Baines or Mrs Herivel with their item - can be solo or group.

The finale of the night is to be "The Time Warp" from "Rocky Horror", and we would like as many people as can fit on the stage to have a fun time dressing up and singing and dancing this famous song. Watch the daily notices for practice times.

On the night there will also be a performance by the drama groups, the rugby team (!!!), music electives, the band and HSC Music performances.

Families are encouraged to attend (more information regarding tickets will be posted shortly).

Rad Schofield wins $5,000 SKINS sponsorship and local club benefits.

Macksville High School's, Yr 12 Student, Rad Schofield, recently heard the news that he is one of four winners from around Australia who has received a $5000 dollar cash sponsorship from the SKINS company. Rad entered the competition earlier in the year after purchasing a pair of SKINS from Sportfirst Nambucca at Nambucca Plaza. The winners were decided on merit after written submissions were put forward.

Rad being a keen AFL player for the Nambucca Valley Lions in their under 18's team, wanted to support his team mates and club by donating half of the money to the Nambucca Valley Lions AFL Football Club which will greatly assist in their fundraising targets for the year.

Housing NSW Youth Scholarships 2012 are now open.

Young people living in social housing, who will be studying Year 11 or 12 at a NSW high school or TAFE college for the HSC or TAFE equivalent during the 2012 academic year, are encouraged to apply. Each scholarship is a one off payment of $2,000 to be used on educational related items. The funds are administered by the school or TAFE college on behalf of the student.

The Housing NSW Youth Scholarship Program assists eligible young people living in social housing or on the NSW Housing Register to complete their HSC or TAFE equivalent. Entries close 5.00 pm on 29 July 2011.

Disabled Athletes Classification

The Australian Paralympic Committee is conducting a classification day for athletes with a physical disability in the Mid North Coast area wishing to be classified for Athletics.

Following the classification day athletes will have a National Classification enabling them to compete up to and including National Championships. Generally athletes who attend this day will compete in AWD events at school carnivals or club events.

STUDENTS TECHNOLOGY TOOLS

Over the next few weeks students will see their student portal change with a new look, enhanced features and a new URL. Four new student portals have been developed to support the different needs of students: Kindergarten to Year 2, Years 3-6, Years 7-12 and TAFE.

On 14 June 2011 Year 9 students will receive their new student portal. Year 9 will be followed by Year 10, Years 7 and 8, then TAFE. Years 11 and 12, Kindergarten to Year 2 and finally Years 3 to 6 will follow early in term 3.

From 14 June 2011 all school students will access their student portal, from home and at school, from a new URL: http://student.det.nsw.edu.au, whether or not they have access to the new student portal.

Students will be able to search, access and organise information for school tasks via their student portal on computers used at home or at school, at any time. The new student portal will have timetable and calendar portlets for students to add their own details. Students will also be able make their portal look the way they want by changing the colour scheme and rearranging, opening or closing portlets.

The opportunity to attend a 5 day (students will be selected on merit) fully subsidised residential course held at Macquarie University in Sydney is now available to for Year 11 students interested in a career in finance. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Macquarie University.

The objective of the Academy is to provide leadership in banking education for senior secondary school students in the public school system. The UBS Finance Academy offers selected students an opportunity to explore and learn about a wide range of career opportunities in finance. The program has been designed to be a creative mix of theory, industry exposure, field visits, team work and fun. A key learning tool is the finance sector case study.

Students are required to provide the following:-

a) Provide 1 A4 typed page about yourself including: special interests, achievements, hobbies, sporting interests, part time work and why you are interested in the UBS Finance Academy 2011.

b) Provide 1 A4 page CV.

c) The student's Principal is to provide a brief note of support and commentary on the student.

University Summer School

Applications open now for the University of Newcastle summer schools!

The Girls Choices Summer School and LIVE IT! (for boys), held at the University of Newcastle, are four day residential programs for Year 9 students from equity target groups across NSW who are commencing year 10 in 2012.

The Girls' Choices Summer School (4 – 8 December 2011) aims to expose students to the range of study and career options that exist for HSC graduates with Maths and Science subjects.

LIVE IT! (11–15 December 2011) is designed to help student's build upon their potential to succeed in years 10, 11 and 12.

Participants will experience life on campus - just like a real uni student. This involves staying on campus, following a timetable and completing activities inside real university lecture theatres, laboratories and classrooms. Participants will also undertake field trips to local organisations to see their possible future careers in action. Along with meeting the equity criteria, students should be willing to be challenged, experience new things and explore new opportunities.

How much does it COST? – both LIVE IT! (for boy's) and Girls Choices Summer School is supported by Commonwealth Equity funds with most expenses covered, including accommodation, all meals and excursions. Students do have to pay a non-refundable attendance fee of $80 (Incl. GST). They are also responsible for all travel costs to and from Newcastle. In cases of financial hardship, assistance will be considered on written application.

Applications close on 1 July 2011 and require Teacher and Principal support of the application.

MACKSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL

A position is available to deliver the Quicksmart numeracy programme in 2011. Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in numeracy, basic computing skills and enjoy working with young people. Training in the programme will be provided.

Instructional Program

The Aim of instruction in the QuickSmart program is to improve accuracy and speed

of recall for basic knowledge and facts that students already understand but cannot yet

automatically recall.

Significance

The Rationale for our instructional intervention is that students are better able to successfully engage with higher order tasks such as problem solving, when the limited capacity of their working memory is available to solve these tasks, rather than using the working memory to re-discover known basic number facts.

The Goal of QuickSmart instruction is to improve speed of recall and accuracy in basic numeracy areas. Our assessment procedures highlight specific knowledge domains in which progress towards higher order functioning is blocked by obstacles related to poor recall or lack of automaticity. QuickSmart instructional interventions are then designed to address these identified obstacles by supporting the students to automatize their existing knowledge and understandings.

The Objective of each intervention lesson is to ensure that students have sufficient understanding in a ‘blocked' domain and then to increase speed of recall and accuracy in a particular sub-set of that domain.

**Instructional Methods used in the QuickSmart program** focus on a variety of practice and recall strategies. Initially the instructor will informally assess each student's knowledge and understanding. At times it will be necessary to spend some instructional time developing knowledge and understanding to the point where the student can begin to automatize their knowledge. Once understanding is established each lesson will involve a number of guided practice activities featuring overt self talk, discussion of memory and retrieval strategies, games and worksheet activities followed by timed independent practise activities.

Assessment will occur at the conclusion of each intervention lesson using QuickSmart's CAAS (Computer-based Academic Assessment System) which measures improvements in accuracy and recall times and provides instant feedback to the student and the instructor. Students will record their results onto a graph and discuss goals for the next lesson. The results of each assessment will be used to inform further teaching and learning.

The 2011 School Swimming Carnival will be held all day at the Macksville Pool.

Safe Footwear at School

It is mandatory for students participating in practical activities in Home Economics, Industrial Arts, Art, Science and Agriculture to wear substantial footwear. It is necessary for staff who work in these areas to also comply with OH&S requirements.

While it is difficult to specify any one standard to meet all situations, fully enclosed shoes with sturdy uppers, firm non-slip sole, no toe and heel openings and low heels are required.

As part of Macksville High School uniform policy in meeting OH&S guidelines, the substantial footwear policy ensures both safety and comfort for students while providing protection from injury in classroom activities.

Update re 2010 laptop cases.

Extract from letter from Dianne Marshall DER Program Director.

"After extensive discussions with Lenovo I am pleased to be able to provide the following advice:

· Lenovo will be providing replacement plastic cases to all schools at no cost. Deliveries will commence at the beginning of Term 3. Delivery will be co-ordinated directly with your TSO by Lenovo. Disposal of old plastic cases is at the discretion of principals, the students may wish to keep them.

· If a screen breaks on a laptop and there is no sign of physical damage, Lenovo will replace the screen as a warranty fault - at no cost. However, if there are dents, knocks, broken corners or other signs of negligence then the school will need to arrange a repair at the current rate.

· All blue 2010 Lenovo laptops should be distributed to students without the plastic case. Lenovo will honour warranty screen replacements provided the case is not used."

The roll out of the 2010 year 9 laptops has been completed and there are many excited students excited. Classroom teachers are progressively incorporating the laptops in their lessons and the students are also using them outside the classrooms.

Parents, carers and students of Year 9 are invited to an information session about the new school laptops.

Custom-made for school use, the laptops are robust, compact and lightweight, and fit easily in a school bag.
They come fully loaded with a range of leading software
and learning applications.

The laptops are wireless enabled so students can connect to the school network and the internet in and around
school grounds.

If you have the internet at home, your child can also connect to school and the internet from home.

Prior to any student receiving a laptop parents, carers and students must sign a user charter and this will be available on the night along with a Digital Education Revolution support package.

We'd love to see you at the information session. We'll give you more information about the laptops, screen a very short video and answer any of your questions.

Digital Education Revolution

The Digital Education Revolution (DER) is due to hit Macksville High School shortly with the roll out of the Year 9 laptops due to commence late November. All Year 9 students will be receiving a laptop with Windows 7, which will remain their own whilst at a DET School and at the end of Year 12 they will be able to take them. Students will be able to take them home and use all the facilities that the laptops have to offer such as the full Adobe suite, Microsoft Office 2007, numerous specialised applications, itunes, Bluetooth and webcam. The High School will be holding a parent information night and will advise the date when confirmed.

The above Year 9 Mathematics students are "test driving" the teacher laptops which are all but identical to the ones they will be receiving.
