Stories and highlights

There's always something to celebrate at our school! From exciting events to proud moments and everyday wins, here are some of our highlights.

A year at our school

Many things happen in our school every day. With so many activities, it is difficult to pinpoint the highlights for the year.

Our school year commences at the start of February where staff engage in quality professional learning to plan for the year ahead. Term 1 is about settling everyone back into school, welcoming Year 7 and supporting each student to engage in the next year of schooling. Our cultural programs commence including the Sista Bro program. We also create opportunities for students to engage in swimming proficiency testing so that they may fully enjoy water activities associated with school.

School photos occur early on in the term and various work readiness programs commence such as White Card courses. In March we typically hold our annual Macksville High School EXPO where we invite community in to tour the school, share a bite to eat and engage in games and activities. NAPLAN occurs for Years 7 and 9 and Pie Day is always fun! At the end of Term 1, Year 10 are invited to engage in Work Experience which is always very positive. Students come back to school with many stories about their trials in the workplace.

In Term 2 we traditionally hold our school cross country and colour run. The Athletics Carnival follows soon after. Chill Tuesdays, the Radio Show and various wellbeing programs support inclusion and wellbeing. Our students engage in the Student Representative Council and Nambucca Youth Council. We start the process of school captains and leadership team nominations and hold Semester 1 achievement ceremonies. We celebrate Reconciliation week in June and also celebrate NAIDOC at the end of Term 2/start of Term 3.

With the cool weather at the start of Term 3 our school ensures that we start the term with a community wellbeing focus. Year 12 students are typically completing major works, and they focus strongly on their final assessments and Trial HSC exams. Captains for 2025 are announced and at the end of the term there is a handover from the current school captains to the incoming school captains.

Students engage in debating and many academic competitions. In September we celebrate R U OK? Day where external providers visit the school to run fun activities with our students. The final week of Term 3 is a highlight with Year 12 coming to the end of their official schooling. This is celebrated by an activities day, a grand graduation ceremony and, of course, the school formal.

Then comes Term 4! This is the best term. The HSC commences. There are many excursions and outdoor activities for students to experience our local environment. Year 10 enjoy a large excursion to Sydney. The Worlds excursion is Macksville High School’s annual rewards excursion. Every two years our school coordinates and hosts Showtime, which is a showcase of creative talent across 10 public schools in the Nambucca Valley. Our end of year assemblies celebrate student success in many forms.

This is just a snapshot of the school year. Macksville High School, that’s my school!
